Conférence grand public Nobel 2018 : DES OUTILS DE LUMIERE, par Yann Louyer, lundi 10 décembre

2018 Nobel Prize in Physics: Tools of Light

On Alfred Nobel's birthday, a free public lecture will be given by Yann Louyer
(Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d'Aquitaine - Université de Bordeaux)

Yann Louyer will present Arthur Ashkin's inventions that revolutionized laser physics and were honored this year by half of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Extremely small objects are now seen in a different light thanks to these advanced precision instruments. They have opened up new fields of research and led to a multitude of industrial and medical applications. Arthur Ashkin invented optical pliers that capture particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser light fingers. This new tool has enabled Ashkin to realize an old science fiction dream: using the pressure of light radiation to move physical objects. The invention of the optical clamp makes it possible to push small particles towards the centre of the laser beam and hold them there.
A major breakthrough came in 1987, when Ashkin used the optical clamp to capture live bacteria without harming them. He immediately began to study biological systems and optical pliers are now widely used to study the mechanisms of life.
